I think that sums up how I feel perfectly! I would often be sweating and exhausted at the end of a GPL race, it was so intense. I don't get that feeling with LFS, however I do enjoy the close racing...
Only just saw this thread....I have been looking to get into some league racing for the first time (never really got into it in GPL or LFS so far for some reason...). I'd be interested in a Canadian League if we got enough people together.
Hey, you're welcome to use that. And if you look in the layout database I have another one or two in there I think, you're welcome to use. I am getting back into making new layouts, so if you ever see a new one of mine, feel free to use it. Looking forward to seeing the server and having some online autox racing!
Regarding changing pressure for optimum contact patch...When autocrossing, whether using road or racing tyres, we put chalk at the edge of the tyre down onto the sidewall and then set the tyre pressure low enough that we are going to the edge of the tyre but not onto the sidewall. In my experience, that's how most people set their pressures in autox, and this was also recommended by the designer of the r-compounds I use. A bit different from circuit racing (?) as you're not concerned about rolling resistance, just contact patch and temperature, often on camber limited cars.
The first couple of pages are from 2002, then someone bumps it in 2004, and some guy called Bob Smith comes along and asks "Is this dig up an old thread week?" The more things change, the more they stay the same! :P
The new auto updater is fantastic, great addition.
I like the difference in the sound between having the roof up and down in the convertibles! I autocross my Miata and I always have the roof down when I race (without fail), because of course it gives you a much better idea of what's going on. I just feel a lot more connected to what's happening, being able to hear the exhaust note better and get more of a sense of what the tyres are doing.
I'll get some audio sometime soon and get some comparisons of roof up and roof down.
General consensus on this idea last time it was brought up was that it would be best to wait until LFS is in more of a complete state to avoid the possibility of a negative review by people who might not care too much about the impact they could have on the game by such a review.... Good idea, but I think more appropriate further down the line. We know it's already a great sim now, but we also know some reviewers can focus on the negative or incomplete parts of a sim.
Yeah, he's certainly inducing oversteer with some of his quick turn in moves. Balls of steel, balls of steel. And the driving skills to back up the balls....
For my road driving, I heel-and-toe when I'm driving enthusiastically, not for engine braking but because it means I'm in the right gear when I get off the brakes and get ready to accelerate out of a corner.
Heel-and-toeing (or shifting down a gear without braking, either way) will not wear out your clutch if you do it properly. If you have the revs matched correctly, you will not be slipping the clutch at all when you release it! There is no reason at all why this would wear out the clutch one bit, as you're connecting it back up when it's spinning at the correct speed. The time you can wear out the clutch more quickly is if you shift down a gear and let the clutch out without blipping the throttle, as the clutch slips until the engine revs come up to the right speed.
It was alright. Not Will Ferrell at his best (like, say, Elf), but had some laughs in it. Not much of a plot (it's Will Ferrell...), would wait to see it on DVD. Will Ferrells love interest is pretty cute though.
I don't remember which particular meet this autocross layout was from, but sometime this summer (hence the name!).
You'll need to look at the replay to see how the course goes as I don't have a map for this one. Basically it crosses over in the middle, loops back around and crosses over again on the way back.
